What is a fractional CFO and when does it make sense for your company?
What they do, how much time they dedicate, the signs you need one and when it is not the answer.
Many mid-sized companies reach a point where it is no longer enough for the accountant to handle compliance: someone has to interpret the numbers, project cash and help make decisions. A full-time finance director does not always make sense yet. That is where the fractional CFO comes in.
What a fractional CFO is
A senior finance executive who works for your company part-time, with a defined scope. The role is the same as an in-house CFO (financial strategy, cash flow, budgeting, decision-ready information), without the payroll, benefits or hiring time of a full-time hire. At Futura, that executive also has a team behind them: operations, data analysis and dashboards.
What they do in practice
- Give you visibility: organized information and a dashboard that updates itself.
- Protect liquidity: projected cash flow and alerts before cash runs short.
- Build the budget and the year’s scenarios.
- Analyze profitability by line, client or business unit.
- Support you with banks, credit and investors.
- Evaluate new projects: opening another unit, acquiring a company, investing in a system.
Signs your company needs one
- You decide with outdated information, or numbers that do not reconcile across areas.
- Sales grow, but cash does not.
- Reports take weeks to produce.
- You are about to seek credit, open a location or buy a business.
- The owner or CEO spends hours on finance instead of running the company.
- The accountant handles compliance, but nobody interprets the numbers.
When it is not the answer
If all you need is tax filings, payroll or compliance accounting, you need an accountant. And if your company already has an established finance director, a fractional CFO can reinforce a project but not replace them. Good advice is an advisor who tells you plainly whether you really need one.
How to start
The first step is organizing what you already have. In the Futura Method we start by reconciling and cleaning your information, then structure it into a map and a dashboard, identify profitability opportunities and, on that base, project and follow up every month. We offer an initial diagnostic at no cost to understand your situation.
